Venice in a Day - St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace
VIP Boat Tour
Today I booked a tour by Walks of Italy. Venice in a Day - St. Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, and VIP boat tour. RS Advice: Rome Tour Book recommends, Walks of Italy. Since I booked some of the Rome tours, I decided to book the Venice tour also. We wanted an expert to share their knowledge and passion for Venice with us. So we decided to book a few tours in some cities. The St. Mark’s Basilica tour included special access to the terraces with incredible views and a close up of the Constantinople horses! The Doge’s Palace tours visited all the most beautiful rooms, from the doge’s private apartments to the Hall of the Great Council.

In the afternoon we went on our VIP boat tour. Fresh Advice: Take the boat tour! We felt like royalty. There should have been 12 people on the tour, but we were the only 2 to show. We had a private tour on their luxury speedboat! If you watched George Clooney's wedding, you saw the luxury boat zipping down the Grand Canal. That is the type of boat we took on our tour. I wanted to wave at everyone as we went under the Rialto Bridge. Ok, I did! We escaped the tourist crowds, cruising the back lanes and top sights of Venice from the water, with an amazing stop at little-visited San Giorgio Maggiore Island. RS Advice: "This is a dreamy church-topped island you can see from the waterfront by St. Mark's Square". Fresh Advice: Take the elevator to the top of the bell tower for an amazing panoramic view of Venice. Very few tourists even make it to this amazing spot!
"Twenty years from now you will be disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover."
- Mark Twain
Our last night in Venice
Our last evening in Venice was magical. We enjoyed taking a leisurely stroll down the back lanes of Venice. We found a beautiful piazza with a leaning tower. Our dinner on the piazza was romantic, delicious, and relaxing. Local families were walking their dogs, kids were playing, and neighbors were visiting with each other in the piazza. Later that night we took Rick Steves advice and went on an evening gondola ride. RS Advice: "Glide through nighttime Venice with your head on someone's shoulder. Follow the moon as it sails past otherwise unseen buildings. Silhouettes gaze down from bridges while window glitter spills onto the black water." -Rick Steves
By the way… we saw him tonight on the gondola next to us!

Wow Moment:
Everyone has a WOW moment on his or her trip. Keep a journal. Our WOW moment happened on a beautiful back canal. We were enjoying a delicious dinner when our daughter called. We had been anxiously expecting her call. She passed her exam to become a Registered Dietitian! She had been working so hard to accomplish this goal. We had tears in our eyes and our hearts were bursting with pride when we heard the news. Then we sat back and realized we were in VENICE! WOW! |
